WHAT IS AN ARTIST'S PROOF?

Traditionally an artist's proof was a print made by the artist during the print-making process in order to understand the progress of the printing plate the artist was working on. In this respect it was a 'work in progress' print.

With the development of modern printing techniques the term is now used to refer to a number of finished prints that are available in addition to the main limited edition, and are reproduced to the same exact high quality. The number of artist proofs should not exceed 10% of the size of the main limited edition.
