Bio : Nicola Wakeling

Nicola Wakeling finds her inspiration in the landscapes of the Outer Hebrides.
Nicola would visit family on the island of North Uist several times a year throughout her childhood; a childhood spent walking in the hills and playing on the beaches of this vast, wild landscape, regardless of the weather.
“It is the sheer scale of the landscape in Scotland that stirs me to paint. Walking on a Hebridean beach with the wind on my face, I look up at a limitless sky and feel tiny.”
Nicola’s paintings certainly communicate that sense of immersion and connection with the landscape. Her sense of space and sensitive handling of paint has allowed her to create images which convey the ‘stillness’ and calm of nature without losing any sense of its power.
Reflective, meditative, yet still dramatic, her work is a fitting tribute to the tradition of landscape painting in Britain.
