The work of London based sculptor Dido Crosby is based on a lifetime’s interest in animals. Thanks to her intense fascination and knowledge of her subject matter, she not only creates a faithful likeness, but also manages to capture the more elusive personalities and quirks of whichever animal has sparked her imagination.
Dido has a degree in Zoology from Oxford University College and a further BA in Sculpture from Central St.Martins, alongside certificates in welding practice and experience of numerous classes from anatomical drawing to furniture making. It is this thorough education in both the visual and practical sides of art, combined with a close affinity for her subject matter, that allows her to create eclectic sculptures in such a wide gamut of materials and finishes. Working in clay, plaster, wax, wood and cast metals and using finishing techniques which range from onyx black patinas to 22 carat gold, Dido creates sculptures which are smooth and undetailed, rough-hewn and raw, or delicate and decorative.
Medium and techniques aside, the real pleasure to be found in Dido’s work lies in her ability to capture character whether it is in the mischievous sleight of a terrier's head, the tentative positioning of a baby rabbit or the proud stance of a full size red stag.
Dido’s energetic and humorous sculptures have earned her many a public commission with her work residing as far afield as a natural history museum in Puerto Rico and a sculpture park in Italy, and as close to home as the Barbican Centre and the Globe Theatre in London.
