THE LIMITED EDITION

Printed on 330gsm fine art paper, each print is individually signed, titled and numbered by Anthony and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.

Mounted with an off-white over charcoal double mount and supplied acetate wrapped.

The framed print is mounted as described and then framed in a 3.5cm wide bevel moulding with a distressed and gunmetal finish. Supplied strung and ready to hang.

 

WHAT IS ARTGLASS?
Standard picture framing glass is called float glass. This glass is used by the majority of picture framers and is perfectly acceptable for use when framing most limited edition prints but it does cause reflection and impurities in the glass cause the framed image to appear duller than intended.


To overcome these compromises we offer Anthony's limited editions with the option of been fitted with a speciality glass called ARTglass designed to reduce reflection and improve clarity.
Unlike 'non-reflective' glass which is etched to reduce reflection but has a cloudy appearance as a result, ARTglass is coated with a high-tech film, reducing reflection whilst adding clarity.
The example shown here is an actual scan of a print framed with ARTglass in the left half of the frame and standard glass in the right half. This image has not been altered or enhanced in any way and clearly shows how ARTglass improves the clarity and vibrancy of the print. From certain viewing angles it appears that the glass is invisible.

THE ARTIST'S PROOF CANVAS

Limited to just 15 stretched canvas prints. Printed on 400gsm Fine Art Canvas, the image is wrapped around the stretcher and varnished just like the original painting so that it can be hung unframed. Fitted to a 2.5cm stretcher and strung ready to hang. Each print is individually signed and numbered by Anthony and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.

This canvas print is also available framed in a hand finished frame as described below. As the canvas is varnished the framed Artist's Proof is not glazed.

WHAT IS AN ARTIST'S PROOF?

Traditionally an artist's proof was a print made by the artist during the print-making process in order to understand the progress of the printing plate the artist was working on. In this respect it was a 'work in progress' print.

With the development of modern printing techniques the term is now used to refer to a number of finished prints that are available in addition to the main limited edition, and are reproduced to the same exact high quality. The number of artist proofs should not exceed 10% of the size of the main limited edition. In this instance the edition size is 150 prints so there are just 15 artist proofs available. The artist proofs may be exactly the same as the main limited edition or, as in this instance, the artist proofs are the same size as the original painting.

Art collectors often prefer artist proofs because there are fewer of them. For collectors of Anthony Dobson the artist's proof offers an opportunity to enjoy a print which very closely replicates the look, finish, and scale of the original painting.

WHAT IS HAND FINISHED FRAMING?

Hand finished frames give a unique character to a print as an almost infinite combination of profiles, finishes and colours are possible.

Standard framing involves cutting and joining pre-finished mouldings to make the frame.

Hand finished framing requires a skilled craftsman who will first select a suitable frame profile which is cut and joined to make a bare wood frame. The frame is then finished using a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques and materials. Depending on the finish chosen a frame may take many days to complete as component layers are built up to achieve the desired result.

The result is a completely bespoke frame made to uniquely complement the print. To this end, no two hand finished frames are ever exactly the same.

For Anthony's Artist Proof Canvases we have chosen a 9mm wide frame with a stained black finish over which a wax is applied. The frame style is called a 'tray' frame. This is because the canvas sits inside the frame with a small gap between the edge of the canvas and the frame. The front of the frame is level with the surface of the painting rather than the frame covering the front edge of the painting as is more usual. This allows the frame to provide a border for the image without encroaching or dominating it.

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1971 Anthony's interest in Formula One meant evenings spent drawing fast cars rather than doing homework, a rebellion that paid off when his first painting sold in 1989 leading to a spate of commissions from private individuals, car manufacturers and racing personalities.

Anthony turned down a place at university to study Graphic Design in order to work on further commissions. Since then, Anthony has worked on the business side of the art world as framer, printer and publisher. Working commercially with artists and building up portfolios for clients cannot have failed to add to his keen eye for colour, line and form.

With a flair for the commercial, technological and creative side of art it is not surprising that Formula One has remained an obsession – a sport that embodies the ultimate fusion of cutting- edge technology, physical fitness and high-octane glamour. Working exclusively in oils, Anthony paints a moment in time on the track, capturing that split second where a car passes the spectator with such speed that the surrounding landscape seems to elongate as if pulled along by the sheer power of the car.

Detailed but not overworked Anthony uses paint in such a way that it carries the smell and sounds of the track, the grip of the tyres, the stress of the engines, the pressure of competing on the edge.
