Juliet Cursham was brought up in Leicestershire, the heart of English fox hunting, surrounded by horses and dogs - subjects she has keenly portrayed since her childhood.  In 1990, Juliet was made a full member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and was awarded the British Sporting Art Trust and Sladmore Gallery sculpture prize in 1993 and 1995.  Juliet spent two years in Australia and New Zealand working with polo ponies, cattle and sheep before returning to England to work for the racehorse trainer, Gavin Pritchard-Gordon in Newmarket. It was in Newmarket where she first started sculpting the racehorses that she rode and watched every day. The number of important racehorse sculptures completed to date, reflects her ability to portray a subject in bronze. Her work is detailed but her main theme is always action and movement. Over the last few years she has completed six life-size sculptures of horses that can be found in Hong Kong, Beijing, Germany and Leicestershire - where she continues to live in Leicestershire with her family, horses and dogs, where she has a large studio in to which she brings her own horses who assist with the accurate portrayal of her life size works. “Photographs, drawings and measurements are all useful but there is nothing to beat working from life.”

Combining her love of art with her life-long involvement with hunting, racing and polo, Juliet’s portraits of horses and busts and figurative works are highly detailed. The accurate likenesses are achieved when sculpting the even tiniest jockey on a small trophy bronze as well as her life size human busts.

Her bronze, silver and gold sculptures of polo ponies have taken her to many countries. These have included trips to the Argentine Open in Buenos Aires, many polo clubs on the Eastern coast of the USA, Brunei, Morocco, Cyprus, St Moritz (Polo on Ice), Beijing, Dubai and Nepal for the Elephant Polo. Along with all this she lived for two winters in Florida, where she developed her appreciation of high goal polo and trained at the Vero Beach Centre for the Arts.
