Richard Garland
Richard Garland’s paintings are dark, atmospheric, suggesting a calm before or after the storm. The results are images that are contemplative and slightly unsettling at the same time. This tension of an unexplained narrative coupled with a filmic ability to capture the beauty and vagaries of light is incredibly compelling.
Light, natural and artificial, is indeed a dominating factor in all of Richard’s works whether reflected in a mirror, in a puddle, or refracted through a broken window. The narrative settings range from industrial to domestic, interior to exterior but all encompass complex interplays of light and dark creating a tangible sense of place.
Essentially Richard creates a narrative in the space between light and dark, action and inaction, substance and ephemera and it is no surprise that he studied at Gemini School of Illustration, which is one of the premier illustration colleges in Europe. He has been commissioned privately on a number of subjects, including portraits for private collections. He has painted in New York, New England and Rome.
