Al Saralis
Al Saralis is a professional artist and a teacher in Fine Art. He was born and brought up in South Wales. His surname derives from his Greek Grandfather who worked in the coal mining industry. He was fortunate in that his family and his education gave him the opportunity to study fine art to degree level enabling him to pursue a career as a painter.
Since his earliest life drawing classes at art school the human figure has always been Saralis' main source of inspiration and continues to be central to Al’s work. The paintings usually consist of a single figure which is stripped of any narrative reference. Recent works have included a series of images where the figure has been fragmented or left incomplete. These were in part inspired by a visit to Florence where Al saw the unfinished “Prigioni“ sculptures of Michealangelo.
Al Saralis’s limited edition prints reflect the classical beauty of the human figure, combined with the dramatic use of light and a directness of pose. The resulting work is always powerful, sometimes confrontational and echoes the vulnerability of contemporary man.
