Artist Q&A with Sarah Jackson

Artist Q&A with Sarah Jackson

Q1. Do your surroundings or the place you live influence your work?

Since a young age I have always felt most at peace living in the countryside. We would have epic family holidays to Canada and I even moved out there for a while where I had up close encounters with so many wild animals including Orcas, Bears, Eagles, Moose and that influenced my work hugely. Now, living by the wild north coast sea the ocean has a strong influence on my work.

Q2. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

For me one of the hardest parts of being an artist is having the time to create. Even though I am a full time artist so much of the day is spent in admin tasks it can be hard to dedicate enough hours to creating and I often work late into the night.

Q3. What's the best piece of advice you have been given?

I've always been told to follow your dreams, and I don't think you can go wrong with that advice!

Q4. What would you love to draw/paint but haven’t yet?

I have always wanted to create a really vibrant rainforest piece. One that each time [you look at it] you see a different animal and it's so joyous and full of life it makes you want to step right into it.

Q5. How would you describe your artistic process?

As a collage artist my process is quite methodical. A lot of people think I have the patience of a saint (which I don't) and even though it can appear to be precise and thought out I find the physical cutting of the paper an expressive and loose action. Rather than working over the whole canvas at the same time I like to work on one section to completion and continue from there.
